Vienna was the capital of the Habsburg empire, and it still looks the part: palaces, grand museums and a ring of boulevards around the old centre. Between sights, the city's coffee houses are made for long sits over cake.

Good to know
- Coffee houses expect you to linger; your coffee comes with a glass of water, and nobody rushes you.
- Halal food is easy: Turkish grills and bakeries line Brunnenmarkt in Ottakring, and Naschmarkt has Middle Eastern stalls.
- Book Schönbrunn palace tickets ahead for a timed entry; the gardens are free to wander.
