Fly with one stop to Milan or Venice, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 16–18 hours all in. Fast trains reach Verona Porta Nuova in a little over an hour from either. Italy is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Verona sits in a loop of the Adige river, with a Roman arena that still hosts opera every summer. Most visitors come for Juliet's balcony, but the real draw is the old centre's piazzas, bridges and hilltop view.

Good to know

  • Porta Nuova station is about 20 minutes' walk from the Arena, or a short bus ride.
  • Arena opera tickets are separate from daytime visits, and popular summer shows sell out early.
  • Halal food is limited, mostly kebab shops; gnocchi with tomato or butter and sage is an easy meat-free plate.
