Limestone hills, blue swimming lagoons and kayaking on the Nam Song.
- Best time
- November to February is dry and cool, with the clearest views of the peaks. March and April are hot and hazy from the burning season. In the wet months, especially August, the river runs fast and trails get slippery.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Vientiane (about 2 hours 40 minutes from KL, a few days a week), then take the fast train, about 1 hour, or drive about 1.5 hours on the expressway. Laos is 1 hour behind KL.

A river town under sheer limestone peaks on the Nam Song. Once a backpacker party stop, it's now about kayaking, cave swims, blue lagoons and short, steep climbs to viewpoints over the rice fields.

Things to do
- The Nam Song by kayakA gentle paddle downriver under the cliffs. Tubing is the lazier version.Map ↗
- Blue Lagoon 1A spring-fed pool for swimming and rope swings, with Tham Phu Kham cave in the cliff above.Map ↗
- Nam Xay viewpointA short, steep scramble to a rocky summit over the whole valley.Map ↗

Good to know
- A couple of Indian restaurants in town serve halal food; elsewhere, stick to fish and vegetable dishes.
- Skip free shots and unlabelled spirits: six foreign tourists died of methanol poisoning here in late 2024.
- Wear proper shoes for Nam Xay; the last stretch is a scramble over sharp rock.
Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
