- Fly direct to Amsterdam on KLM (about 13 hours). Trains from Schiphol reach Utrecht Centraal in about 30 minutes. The Netherlands is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Utrecht's canals have a second level: old wharves and cellars right down by the water, now cafés and terraces. The Dom Tower rises over the centre, and students and bicycles keep the streets busy.

Good to know
- The Dom Tower can only be climbed on a guided tour, so book a slot ahead.
- Lombok, just west of the station, is the place for halal food, with Turkish and Moroccan bakeries, butchers and grills.
