uluru–kata tjuta national park

Red desert, Uluru at sunrise and walks between Kata Tjuta's huge rock domes.

Best time
April–September is the best time, with warm days and cold desert nights in June–August. December–February often goes above 40°C, and the longer walks close early on the hottest days.
How long
3 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop, usually via Sydney or Melbourne, to Ayers Rock Airport, about 13–16 hours all in. Yulara, where everyone stays, is 10 minutes from the airport and about 25 minutes from Uluru. The Northern Territory is 1.5 hours ahead of KL all year.

Uluru rises out of flat red desert, with caves, waterholes and Aṉangu stories all around its base. Kata Tjuta, about 45 minutes' drive away, is a cluster of huge rounded domes with walks of its own.

Good to know

  • Climbing Uluru has been banned since 2019, and signs at sacred sites around the base ask you not to take photos.
  • You need a park pass, which you can buy online before you go. Carry more water than you think you need on every walk.
  • All the restaurants in Yulara belong to one resort, and halal meat is hard to find; seafood, vegetarian dishes or self-catering from the supermarket are the easy options.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
