ulu yam
Thick loh mee in Ulu Yam Lama, old village streets and a river dip at Sungai Sendat.
- Best time
- Any time of year for the food. Come early, as the best-known loh mee shops get busy by lunchtime at weekends. Skip the river after heavy rain.
- How long
- Half a day
- Getting there
- About an hour's drive north of KL, via the North–South Expressway and Batang Kali, or the slower hill road through Selayang. There's no handy public transport.

Two small villages in the hills of Hulu Selangor, Ulu Yam Lama and Ulu Yam Bharu, and one big reason to drive up: loh mee. The dish is said to have started in Ulu Yam Lama, and the old shops there still pack out at lunch. Sungai Sendat's forest river is close by for a dip afterwards.

Things to do
- Ulu Yam LamaThe original village, home to the oldest loh mee shops. Eat first, then walk the short main street.Map ↗
- Ulu Yam BharuThe bigger village down the road, with more loh mee shops and kopitiams if the first is packed.Map ↗
- Sungai SendatA forest river with shallow pools below the falls. The upper waterfall is off-limits.Map ↗
Good to know
- Loh mee is a pork dish, so the famous shops aren't halal.
- At Sungai Sendat, stay at the lower pools and get out of the water if it starts turning brown.
- Kuala Kubu Bharu is about half an hour further north if you want to keep going.
