ujung kulon national park
Last home of the Javan rhino, with wild beaches at Java's western tip.
- Best time
- The drier months, roughly April to October, have calmer seas for the boat trips. From about December to February, waves can be rough and some trips are cancelled.
- How long
- 3 days, 2 nights
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Jakarta, about 2 hours, then drive about 5–6 hours to Sumur or Taman Jaya at the edge of the park. Boats from there to Peucang Island take a few hours. Most people book a package that covers the transfers.

A UNESCO-listed national park at the far western tip of Java, protecting the largest remaining lowland rainforest on the island. It's the last home of the Javan rhino, though you will almost certainly not see one. What you do get is empty beaches, river canoeing, deer and wild cattle, and a real sense of being far from anywhere.
Things to do

Good to know
- Don't expect to see a rhino. Fewer than a hundred survive, and they keep to dense forest.
- Entry needs a permit and a licensed guide. Tour packages usually arrange both.
- Phone signal is patchy and there are no shops inside the park, so bring cash, snacks and insect repellent.
