Udaipur wraps around a chain of lakes, with palace walls rising straight out of the water and the Aravalli hills behind. It's the slow stop on a Rajasthan trip: short walks between ghats, rooftop dinners and a lake view from every terrace.

Good to know
- Rajasthani cooking is largely vegetarian, so meals are easy; for halal meat, Muslim-run Mughlai restaurants are the ones to look for.
- Cars can't reach many old-city guesthouses, so expect a short walk from the drop-off with your bags.
