Italy's first capital is a city of long arcades, grand squares and old cafés, with the Alps at the end of the street on clear days. It also has an Egyptian collection second only to Cairo's, and a cinema museum inside its landmark tower.

Good to know
- The Mole's panoramic lift has its own ticket, so book that if the view is what you're after.
- Halal butchers and kebab shops cluster around the Porta Palazzo market, and San Salvario, near Porta Nuova station, has more halal restaurants.
