- Best time
- May–September is the season on the east coast, with calm, clear water, and April is good too. November–January brings northeast-monsoon rain and rough seas, and boat trips often stop.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct from KL to Colombo (about 3.5 hours), then it's about 6 hours by road. Sri Lanka is 2.5 hours behind KL.

Trincomalee is a port town on one of the world's deepest natural harbours, with a Hindu temple on the cliffs above it and long, calm beaches just to the north. Uppuveli is close to town, while Nilaveli is quieter and nearer the boats to Pigeon Island.

Things to do
- Koneswaram TempleA Hindu temple on Swami Rock, a headland high above the open sea.Map ↗
- Fort FrederickThe old Portuguese and Dutch fort on the road up to the temple, still an army base, with spotted deer wandering about.Map ↗
- Uppuveli and NilaveliLong, gentle beaches north of town; Uppuveli has more cafés, Nilaveli more space.Map ↗
- Pigeon IslandA small marine park off Nilaveli, with shallow coral, reef fish and blacktip reef sharks.Map ↗
Good to know
- Trincomalee has a large Muslim community, and halal restaurants are easy to find in town.
- Pigeon Island needs a park ticket as well as the boat, and the coral is fragile, so no standing on it.
