A highland region of South Sulawesi, home to the Toraja people and their boat-shaped tongkonan houses. Toraja life centres on elaborate funerals, and the dead are laid to rest in caves, cliff graves and stone tombs across the valleys. Add cool air, rice terraces and good coffee, and it's one of Indonesia's most unusual trips.

Good to know

  • If you visit a funeral, go with a local guide, wear dark clothes and bring a small gift for the family, such as sugar or coffee.
  • Much Torajan food uses pork. Look for Muslim-run warungs in Rantepao and Makale if you need halal food.
  • Ask before taking photos at graves and ceremonies.
