tokyo in 5 days, 4 nights

Asakusa on arrival, Tsukiji and teamLab Planets on day two, Meiji Shrine, Shibuya and Shinjuku on day three, a day trip to Kamakura, and a last morning before the flight home.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive and Asakusa

    Morning
Fly to Haneda or Narita, about 7 hours; Japan is an hour ahead of Malaysia. Get an IC card (Suica or Pasmo), take the train into the city and drop your bags at the hotel.
    Lunch
Ramen near the hotel. Many shops have you order from a ticket machine by the door.
    Afternoon
Head to Asakusa and walk up the Nakamise shopping street to Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple.
    Evening
An early dinner and an early night after the flight. The nearest konbini will do if nobody wants to go out again.
  2. Day 2

    Tsukiji and teamLab

    Morning
Konbini coffee, then Tsukiji Outer Market for a late breakfast of sushi, tamagoyaki and grilled seafood from the stalls.
    Afternoon
Take the train to Toyosu, a short ride away, for teamLab Planets. You walk through barefoot and the water reaches your knees in places, so wear trousers you can roll up.
    Evening
Dinner near the hotel: an izakaya, curry rice, or another bowl of ramen.
  3. Day 3

    Harajuku, Shibuya and Shinjuku

    Morning
Konbini breakfast, then the Yamanote Line to Harajuku for Meiji Shrine. The walk through the forest to the shrine is quietest early.
    Lunch
Snacks on Takeshita Street in Harajuku, or a sit-down lunch nearby.
    Afternoon
Ride one stop to Shibuya for the crossing. Cross it at street level, then watch it from one of the buildings above.
    Evening
Take the Yamanote Line up to Shinjuku, about 7 minutes, for yakitori in the tiny lanes of Omoide Yokocho. Most places seat only a handful, so a big group may need to split up.
  4. Day 4

    Day trip to Kamakura

    Morning
Take the train to Kamakura, about an hour from central Tokyo, and walk from the station to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine.
    Lunch
Lunch and snacks on Komachi-dori, the shopping street by the station.
    Afternoon
Ride the little Enoden train to Hase for the Great Buddha, then head back to Tokyo.
    Evening
Dinner near the hotel and an early night.
  5. Day 5

    Last morning

    Morning
A last konbini breakfast and some shopping near the hotel.
    Lunch
    One more bowl of ramen.
    Afternoon
Train to the airport and fly home. Narita is about an hour from the city; Haneda is closer.

Good to know

  • Book teamLab Planets ahead. Tickets are for set time slots, and weekends sell out.
  • Trains stop around midnight, so plan your last ride home from Shinjuku.
  • Rather see Nikko? It's about 2 hours each way, so start early and swap it in for Kamakura.
