Sabah's third-largest town, on the south-east coast near the Indonesian border. Most travellers pass through on the way to Semporna and the dive islands, but it's a working cocoa and seafood town with a rainforest park on its doorstep.

Good to know
- Heading to Semporna's islands? Fly into Tawau, not Kota Kinabalu. It saves most of a day.
- Ferries run from Tawau to Nunukan and Tarakan in North Kalimantan, Indonesia. Bring your passport and check entry rules before you go.
