Boat and kayak trips on Malaysia's biggest natural lake, home of the Semelai.

Best time
March to September, ideally on a dry weekend. For now, trips run on Saturdays and Sundays. The monsoon from about November to January floods the lake and can stop them.
How long
1 day
Getting there
About 3–3.5 hours' drive from KL: the East Coast Expressway to Temerloh, then south past Bandar Bera. The lake is about an hour and a half from Temerloh, so drive yourself.

≈ 103 km from KL, as the crow flies

Malaysia's biggest natural lake, though it's really a maze of swamp forest, pandanus and patches of open water, and the country's first Ramsar wetland. The Semelai, the Orang Asli people of the lake, have lived around it for generations. Boat and kayak trips restarted in February 2026 after about ten years without them.

Makan

Things to do

  1. A boat tripBoatmen from the Bera district tourism association take you through the narrow channels between the pandanus and swamp forest.Map ↗
  2. KayakingPaddle the quieter channels at your own pace. Kayaks go out on the same weekends as the boats.Map ↗
  3. Pos IskandarA Semelai village by the lake, known for its mengkuang weaving: strips of pandanus leaf dyed and woven by hand into mats and baskets.Map ↗
  4. BirdwatchingEarly morning on the water is the best time for kingfishers, herons and forest birds.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Trips only run at weekends for now, so contact the Bera district tourism association (Persatuan Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan Daerah Bera) before a weekday drive.
  • Ask before taking photos in the Semelai villages, and buy crafts straight from the weavers.
  • Bring insect repellent and a hat. There's little shade on the water.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
