tanjung puting national park
Klotok boat trips up a jungle river to orangutan feeding stations.
- Best time
- The drier months, roughly June to September, are easiest on the trails. In the wetter months there's more wild fruit, so fewer orangutans come to the feeding stations. Haze from land fires can be a problem in very dry years.
- How long
- 3 days, 2 nights
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Jakarta, about 2 hours, then on to Pangkalan Bun, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Flights also run from Surabaya and Semarang. Kumai, where the klotoks start, is about 30 minutes' drive from the airport.

A national park of peat swamp and lowland forest in Central Kalimantan, famous for its orangutans. You travel up the Sekonyer River on a klotok, a wooden houseboat where you eat, sleep and watch the jungle go by. The highlight is seeing orangutans swing in to the feeding stations.

Good to know
- Keep your distance from orangutans, never feed them, and don't carry food on the trails.
- Book with a licensed operator. They arrange park permits, a guide and meals on board.
- Bring insect repellent, a torch and shoes you don't mind getting muddy.
