The classic rainforest trip: canopy walk, river boats and night jungle walks.

Best time
March to September is drier. The wettest months, roughly November to January, can flood the trails and river and close some activities. Expect heat, humidity and leeches whenever you go.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
About 4 hours' drive from KL to Kuala Tahan via Jerantut. The classic way in is the river boat from Kuala Tembeling jetty near Jerantut, about 3 hours upstream. Many packages include transfers from KL.

Malaysia's oldest national park, a huge stretch of rainforest across Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu thought to be more than 130 million years old. Most visitors stay at Kuala Tahan, by the park headquarters on the river, for jungle trails, the canopy walkway and boat trips.

Good to know

  • Wear leech socks or long socks, and bring insect repellent.
  • You need a park entry permit, plus a camera permit if you're taking photos. Get them at the park office.
  • Go with a guide for night walks and longer treks. The multi-day trek to Gunung Tahan needs a licensed guide.
