tainan in 3 days, 2 nights
The fast train down from Taipei and Shennong Street at night, a day of beef soup, temples and Anping's old harbour, and a milkfish breakfast before heading home.
Day 1 Down to Tainan
- Morning
- Fly from KL to Taipei, about 4.5 hours; Taiwan is on the same time as Malaysia. Take the Airport MRT to the High Speed Rail station and ride south to Tainan, about 1 hour 45 minutes.
- Afternoon
- Change to the shuttle train from the HSR station into the city and check in.
- Evening
- Danzai noodles, small bowls with shrimp and minced pork sauce, then a walk down Shennong Street, a short old street of lantern-lit shophouses, bars and cafés.
Day 2 Temples and Anping
- Morning
- Beef soup for breakfast, thin slices of raw beef cooked in the bowl by hot broth. Then Chihkan Tower and the Confucius Temple, a short ride apart in the city centre.
- Lunch
- Coffin bread, a thick slice of fried bread hollowed out and filled with creamy stew.
- Afternoon
- Taxi to Anping, about 15 minutes, for the ruins of Fort Zeelandia, the old street of snacks and the warehouse taken over by banyan roots.
- Evening
- Back in the centre for dinner and more snacks. Share plates so you can try more.
Day 3 Milkfish and home
- Morning
- Milkfish porridge for breakfast, then the Hayashi Department Store, a restored 1930s department store with a small shrine on the roof.
- Lunch
- One more bowl of danzai noodles or beef soup.
- Afternoon
- Shuttle train to the HSR station, ride north to Taoyuan and fly home. If your flight leaves from Kaohsiung, it's about an hour away instead.
Good to know
- Many well-known snack stalls sell out early, so eat early, especially for beef soup.
- Pork and lard turn up in a lot of dishes, including danzai noodles, so ask if you avoid them.
- The sights are spread around the city. Taxis and rental bikes are the easiest way between them.
