An old canal city west of Shanghai, famous for its classical gardens, whitewashed lanes and silk. The gardens are UNESCO-listed, and each one is a small world of rocks, ponds and pavilions that's best explored slowly.

Good to know

  • Get to the big gardens when they open. By mid-morning the tour groups arrive.
  • Book train tickets ahead with your passport. Weekend trains from Shanghai can sell out.
  • Most places expect Alipay or WeChat Pay. Link your card to one before you fly and keep some cash as a backup.
