sungai congkak recreational forest

A shallow jungle river for a family picnic and a dip, an hour from KL in Hulu Langat.

Best time
February to October, on a dry morning. Weekend crowds arrive from about 9am, so get there when the gate opens. Skip November and December, when monsoon rain upstream can turn the river dangerous fast.
How long
Half a day to 1 day
Getting there
About an hour's drive from KL via Cheras and Jalan Hulu Langat, heading towards Pangsun; follow the signs for Chongkak Park & Resort. There's no public transport.

An old-school Hulu Langat day out: a clear, shallow river through tall forest, picnic spots along the banks and pools where kids can splash about. Tourism Selangor runs it as Chongkak Park & Resort, with chalets and campsites if you want to stay over. There's no waterfall; the river is the point.

Makan

  2. Durian and rambutanIn the mid-year fruit season, roadside stalls along Jalan Hulu Langat sell fruit from the local orchards.Map ↗

Things to do

  1. The riverWade, float and sit in the shallow pools; the water stays cool even at midday.Map ↗
  2. A riverside picnicClaim a spot under the trees early and make lunch the main event.Map ↗
  3. Birds and butterfliesThe quieter stretches are a favourite with birdwatchers and butterfly photographers.Map ↗
  4. Gunung Nuang and Sungai LepohBoth start a few minutes up the road if anyone wants a proper hike.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Get out of the water as soon as it rises, turns brown or carries leaves; the rain causing it may be far upstream.
  • Keep food away from the monkeys and take your rubbish home.
