sumba

Raw island of horseback traditions, peaked-roof villages and empty beaches.

Best time
The dry season, roughly May to October, has the clearest skies, and the hills turn golden. The Pasola, a ritual horseback battle in West Sumba, is held around February and March, timed by the arrival of sea worms on the shore.
How long
4–5 days
Getting there
Fly from KL to Bali, about 3 hours, then about an hour on to Tambolaka in the west or Waingapu in the east. The drive between the two takes about 4–5 hours.

A big, dry island east of Bali where Marapu beliefs, megalithic tombs and tall thatched houses are still part of daily life. The landscape is rolling savanna, with clear lagoons and long, mostly empty beaches. Distances are big and roads are slow, so give it time.

Good to know

  • Hire a car with a driver. Public transport is limited and distances are long.
  • In traditional villages, ask before entering or taking photos. Signing the guest book and leaving a small donation is normal.
  • Ask a travel clinic about malaria before you go, and bring insect repellent.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
