Shakespeare's timber-framed hometown, riverside lawns and an evening at the theatre.

Best time
April–October suits riverside walks and the gardens at the Shakespeare houses, with July–August the busiest. November–February is cold and dark early, but still works for a theatre break.

Stratford is the small market town where Shakespeare was born, married and buried, and his family houses sit among ordinary shops and tea rooms. Stay the night for a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre after the coach tours leave.

Good to know

  • Popular RSC shows sell out, so book the play first and fit the sightseeing around it.
  • Halal choice in town is small; Birmingham, about an hour away by train, has plenty around Ladypool Road and the Balti Triangle.
