snæfellsnes
A glacier-topped volcano, sea cliffs and fishing villages on one long peninsula.
- Best time
- June–September is best for the coastal walks and a relaxed drive. Winter brings short days, icy roads and strong wind; spring can still have snow on the mountain passes.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Keflavík, usually via London, Amsterdam or Istanbul (about 19–21 hours all in). Stykkishólmur is about 2.5 hours' drive from Reykjavík. Iceland is 8 hours behind KL all year.

Snæfellsnes packs a glacier-capped volcano, lava fields, little harbours and sea cliffs into one peninsula, often called Iceland in miniature. Give it two nights so you can move with the weather.

Things to do
- Arnarstapi to HellnarA clifftop path past basalt arches, rock pools and nesting seabirds.Map ↗
- DjúpalónssandurA black-pebble beach scattered with rusted shipwreck metal, below twisted lava.Map ↗
- KirkjufellThe pointed mountain everyone photographs, from the waterfall just outside Grundarfjörður.Map ↗
- StykkishólmurA harbour town of old wooden houses; climb the little island of Súgandisey for the view.Map ↗
Good to know
- Kirkjufell is for looking at, not climbing; the route up is steep and has seen fatal falls.
- Fill up and buy groceries in the bigger villages, because services are far apart around the western tip.
- There's no halal meat on the peninsula, so stock up in Reykjavík before you go.
