Sigiriya is a 5th-century palace on top of a rock that rises about 200 metres straight out of the flat green plains. Below it are water gardens and moats, and the village makes a relaxed base for Sri Lanka's ancient cities.

Things to do
- Lion RockStairways past the frescoed 'cloud maidens' and between giant stone lion's paws to the palace ruins on the summit.Map ↗
- Water gardensSymmetrical pools, fountains and terraces at the foot of the rock, among the oldest landscaped gardens in Asia.Map ↗
- PidurangalaThe next rock over, a shorter climb past a temple and a reclining Buddha, with the best view of Sigiriya itself.Map ↗

Good to know
- Lion Rock is best right at opening, before the heat and the tour groups; Pidurangala makes a separate sunrise or sunset climb.
- Pidurangala starts at a temple, so cover shoulders and knees, and the last part is a boulder scramble.
- Halal is harder to find in the village than in Kandy; vegetable rice and curry is the easy fallback, and nearby Dambulla has Muslim-run shops.
