Base camp for Angkor, plus Pub Street, night markets and fish amok.

Best time
November to February is cooler and dry, and also the busiest. March to May is very hot. The rainy season, from about June to October, is greener and quieter, with heavy afternoon downpours.
How long
3 days, 2 nights
Getting there
Fly KL to Siem Reap, about 2 hours. The airport is well out of town, so allow about an hour by road. Buses from Phnom Penh take around 6 hours. Malaysians don't need a visa for short visits.

Cambodia's tourism hub and the gateway to the temples of Angkor, a short tuk-tuk ride north of town. Beyond the temples there's the old French Quarter around the Old Market, a busy food and bar scene, Apsara dance and circus shows, and floating villages on the Tonle Sap.

Good to know

  • Buy your Angkor pass at the official ticket centre or online. You need it for every temple, and it carries your photo.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at the temples. It's enforced, especially for Angkor Wat's upper level.
  • Siem Reap has a small Cham Muslim community, and halal restaurants aren't hard to find in town.
