shirahama

A white-sand bay, seaside hot baths and wave-cut rock shelves south of Osaka.

Best time
April–May and October–November are pleasant for the coast and the baths. July–August is beach season, hot and crowded, and August–September carries typhoon risk.

Getting there
Fly from KL to Osaka Kansai (about 6.5 hours). The Kuroshio limited express from Shin-Osaka reaches Shirahama in about 2.5 hours, then it's a short bus ride to the beach. JAL also flies from Tokyo Haneda to Nanki-Shirahama Airport, just outside town. Japan is an hour ahead of KL.

Good to know

  • Shirahama Station is a few kilometres inland. Meiko's local buses link it with the beach, the cliffs and the rock shelves.
