Any time of year. Mornings and late afternoons are cooler, and i-City is best after dark. During Ramadan, the big bazaars are a reason to come on their own.

About 40 minutes' drive from KL on the Federal Highway. The KTM Komuter stops at Shah Alam, but the sights are spread out, so a car or Grab is easier.

Selangor's capital was Malaysia's first planned city after independence, and it's all wide roads, lakes and parks. Its centrepiece is the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, better known as the Blue Mosque, one of the largest in Southeast Asia. It makes a solid day out for families and for food.

Good to know

  • Dress modestly at the mosque. Robes and headscarves are usually provided for visitors.
  • The Federal Highway jams at peak hours, so leave KL early.
