Hokkaido's capital is a grid of wide streets and big parks, with a bowl of miso ramen never far away. It's the base for most Hokkaido trips, with Otaru, Noboribetsu and Lake Toya all easy to reach from here.

Good to know

  • Sapporo has a fair number of halal and Muslim-friendly restaurants, and the city's official tourism site lists them.
  • Hotels fill up months ahead for the Snow Festival, so book early for February.
  • An underground walkway runs from Sapporo Station to Odori, handy when the streets are icy.
