Woodcarving workshops, old railway bridges and spring tung flowers in Hakka country.
- Best time
- April–May brings the tung blossom, and October–November is good for walking. July–August is hot and wet; misty winter days are better for workshops than hill walks.
- How long
- 1 day
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Taipei Taoyuan (about 4.5 hours). Take the high-speed rail to Miaoli or Taichung, then a local train or taxi to Sanyi; allow about 2 hours from the airport.

A small Hakka town in the Miaoli hills, famous for woodcarving. It's a slow day of workshops and old railway sights, and in spring the hills turn white with tung blossom.

Good to know
- The everyday Sanyi station and old Shengxing Station are different places; a taxi or bus links the sights.
- Book the rail bikes ahead for weekends.
- Hakka cooking leans on pork. Taiwan's Buddhist vegetarian restaurants (素食) are the easy pork-free choice.
