April–June and September–October are sunny with cool evenings, and late September brings the chile harvest and golden aspens in the mountains. July–August bring afternoon thunderstorms; winter is cold and can be snowy at this altitude.

Getting there
Fly to Albuquerque with two stops, usually via Tokyo and Denver or Taipei and Phoenix, about 23–28 hours all in. Santa Fe is about an hour north by car, or 1.5 hours on the Rail Runner train. New Mexico is 14 hours behind KL, 15 from November to early March. Malaysians need a US B1/B2 visitor visa, usually with an interview at the embassy in KL; ESTA isn't open to Malaysian passports.

Good to know

  • Santa Fe is over 2,100 metres up; drink plenty of water and take the first day easy.
  • Halal is very hard to find, and carne adovada and posole are pork; bean and cheese dishes are safer, but ask about lard.
