Salzburg's old town is a tight cluster of church domes and narrow lanes between the Salzach river and a cliff topped by a fortress. Mozart was born here, and The Sound of Music was filmed all around it.

Good to know

  • Hotels across Salzburg state give overnight guests a Guest Mobility Ticket covering local buses and trains for the whole stay.
  • Turkish grills and kebab shops around the main station are the easiest halal option; the old town's traditional inns lean on pork.
  • Go up to the fortress early, before the tour groups.
