salalah
Frankincense history, coconut stalls and hills that turn green in the summer monsoon.
- Best time
- July–September is the khareef: misty, green and busy with Gulf holidaymakers, with rough seas. October–March is sunny and dry, good for the beaches. May is hot and humid, and June is the changeover before the hills turn green.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop, usually via Muscat, about 10–12 hours all in. The airport is about 15 minutes from the centre. Oman is 4 hours behind KL.

Salalah, in Oman's far south, has coconut palms, banana plantations and frankincense trees, and a summer monsoon unlike anywhere else in Arabia. During the khareef, drizzle and mist turn the hills green while the rest of the Gulf bakes.

Things to do

Good to know
- During the khareef the sea is rough and swimming is dangerous, so enjoy the beaches from the shore.
- Food is halal as standard. Wadi Darbat and Mughsail are on opposite sides of town, so hire a car or a driver.
