saint-malo
Granite ramparts, long tidal beaches and crêpes inside the old corsair town.
- Best time
- May to September has the longest days and the best beach weather, though July and August are busy. November to February is cold and stormy, with fewer good hours for the ramparts.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Paris on Malaysia Airlines (about 13.5 hours), then a TGV from Montparnasse to Saint-Malo (about 2.5 hours, direct or via Rennes). The walled town is a 25-minute walk or a short bus ride from the station. France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Saint-Malo is a walled granite town facing straight onto the Channel, rebuilt stone by stone after the Second World War. Inside are crêperies and narrow streets; outside, the tide pulls back to show huge beaches and paths to little islands.
Makan
- GalettesBuckwheat crêpes with savoury fillings; egg, cheese and mushroom is the classic order without ham.Map ↗

Things to do
- The rampartsA full loop of the walls, looking down over beaches, sea forts and rooftops.Map ↗
- Intra-MurosThe old town inside the walls: tight lanes, tall granite houses and busy little squares.Map ↗
- Grand BéA tidal island you can walk to across the sand at low tide, with the writer Chateaubriand's grave on top.Map ↗
- Plage du SillonA long sandy beach running east from the walls, lined with old wooden breakwater posts.Map ↗
- CancaleAn oyster town half an hour along the coast, where people eat them on the harbour wall.Map ↗
Good to know
- Safe-crossing times for Grand Bé are posted at the beach. The tide covers the path fast, so head back in good time.
- The ramparts catch the full sea wind, so bring a windproof layer even on a sunny day.
- Halal meat is hard to find inside the walls, but crêperies make it easy to eat well without it.
