sagada

Hanging coffins, caves and sunrise over a sea of clouds in the Cordillera.

Best time
November to April is drier, and December to February gets properly cold at night. Avoid Holy Week and long weekends, when the town is packed, and the rainy season from about June to October, when landslides can close the mountain roads.
How long
2–3 days, plus travel
Getting there
Fly KL to Manila (about 4 hours). From Manila it's a long overnight bus of around 12 hours, direct or via Baguio. From Baguio it's about 5–6 hours on winding mountain roads.

A small, cool mountain town in the Cordillera of northern Luzon, where the Kankanaey people still bury their dead in coffins hung on cliff faces. Visitors come to see the coffins, scramble through limestone caves, hike to waterfalls and watch the sun rise over a sea of clouds. It's a long way from Manila, so give it a few days.

Good to know

  • Register and pay the environmental fee at the tourism office when you arrive. Guides are required for the caves and most trails.
  • The coffins and burial caves are sacred. Don't touch them, and keep your voice down.
  • Bring warm layers. Nights get cold, especially from December to February.
