rügen
White chalk cliffs, Baltic beach towns and a steam railway between seaside villages.
- Best time
- June–September is best for walking and the beaches, with the Baltic warmest for swimming in July–August. Winter is windy and cold, and many seaside businesses close.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Berlin, usually via Doha, Istanbul or Frankfurt, about 15–17 hours all in. Trains from Berlin to Binz take about 4 hours, some with a change at Stralsund. Germany is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Rügen is Germany's biggest island, linked to the mainland by bridge and causeway. It has white chalk cliffs, old beech forests and long sandy beaches backed by white 19th-century seaside villas.

Good to know
- Without a car, base yourself in Binz or Sellin; getting from one end of the island to the other takes longer than the map suggests.
- Stay back from the cliff edges in Jasmund; the chalk can collapse without warning.
- Halal meat is hard to find on the island; fish rolls are the easy option, and bring groceries from Berlin.
