Pastel houses above the sea, steep stone lanes and pine-shaded swimming coves.

Best time
May–June and September are warm, good for walking and swimming, though the sea is still cool in May. July–August is busy; winter is quiet and wetter, with some restaurants closed.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Zagreb, usually via Dubai or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in, then it's about 3 hours by car or 4–5 hours by coach. Pula airport, about 40 minutes away, has summer flights from other European cities. Croatia is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Rovinj's old town fills a small hill on the Istrian coast, with pastel houses rising straight out of the sea to a tall Venetian-style bell tower. Italian is still spoken alongside Croatian, and it's a place for slow walks, rocky swims and truffle pasta.

Good to know

  • The old town is car-free and steep, so park outside and carry only a small bag in.
  • Swimming spots are rocks or pebbles, so bring water shoes.
  • Halal food is very scarce in Rovinj; seafood and truffle pasta are the easy choices.
