rovaniemi

Santa's Arctic Circle village, snowy forests and long winter nights for aurora outings.

Best time
February–March has deep snow and more daylight for outings. December is peak Christmas season, very busy and dark, and snow usually but not always settled; June–August is for rivers and the midnight sun, with no darkness for the northern lights.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Helsinki, usually via Singapore, Doha or Istanbul (about 16–18 hours all in), then about 1 hour 20 minutes on to Rovaniemi, or take the overnight train. The airport is 10 minutes from town. Finland is 5 hours behind KL in summer and 6 in winter.

Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle and calls itself Santa's official hometown. It's the easiest way into Finnish Lapland, with snow, huskies and reindeer a short ride from town.

Good to know

  • Book December trips months ahead; it's by far the busiest time of year.
  • Pick tours that include thermal overalls and boots; ordinary winter jackets aren't enough at minus 20.
  • Halal meat is hard to find, so lean on salmon soup and fish, and tell tour operators in advance about any meals included.
