Getting there
Lufthansa flies direct from KL to Frankfurt from late October 2026, about 13 hours; otherwise it's one stop via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul. Trains from Frankfurt airport take about 3 hours, changing at Würzburg and Steinach. Germany is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Rothenburg is a medieval walled town that has barely changed in centuries, with half-timbered houses, towers and cobbled lanes above the Tauber valley. By day it's full of tour groups; stay the night and it's yours.

Good to know

  • Book trains to 'Rothenburg ob der Tauber'; there are other Rothenburgs in Germany.
  • Stay inside the walls to have the lanes to yourself in the early morning.
  • Halal meat is hard to find in Rothenburg; bring food from Würzburg or Frankfurt.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
