romblon

Marble workshops, a harbour fort and the pale sandbar at Bonbon Beach.

Best time
February to May is dry, with calm seas for the crossing. July to October is typhoon season, when ferries are often cancelled, and the northeast winds from November to January can make the crossing rough.
How long
3 days, plus the ferry
Getting there
Fly direct to Manila (about 4 hours from KL), then about 3 hours by road to Batangas port and an overnight ferry of about 9–10 hours to Romblon town. Don't book Odiongan on Tablas by mistake. The Philippines is on the same time as KL.

A small harbour town on the island of the same name, known as the Philippines' marble capital. Spanish-era forts and a stone cathedral fill the town, and Bonbon Beach's sandbar is a short tricycle ride away.

Good to know

  • The ferry usually arrives in the middle of the night, so arrange a pickup and room access before you leave Batangas.
  • Walk back from the sandbar before the tide turns.
  • Halal food is very limited. Grilled fish and seafood are the easy fallback, and bring your own food for the ferry.
