rio de janeiro
Mountain viewpoints, beach walks, samba and a city wrapped around bays and granite peaks.
- Best time
- April–October are warm, drier and more comfortable, with the odd cool spell in winter. December–March are hot and humid with heavy showers; Carnival, in February or early March, is a huge, very busy event of its own.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop, usually via Dubai, Paris or Amsterdam, about 25–30 hours all in. Copacabana and Ipanema are 45–75 minutes from Galeão airport. Rio is 11 hours behind KL all year.

Rio wraps around bays and granite peaks, with forest on the hills and beaches along the city's edge. A few days mix the big viewpoints with beach walks, samba bars and juice stalls on every corner.

Good to know
- Halal is limited: the churrascarias aren't halal, and feijoada, the Saturday black-bean stew, is pork. The mosque in Tijuca can point you to halal butchers.
- Take only what you need to the beach, and keep your phone out of sight on busy streets.
