mount rinjani
Lombok's crater-lake volcano and a tough, multi-day summit trek.
- Best time
- The national park closes to trekkers for the wet season, usually January to March. June to September is the driest and clearest.
- How long
- 2–4 days of trekking
- Getting there
- Fly KL to Lombok, about 3 hours. The trailheads at Sembalun and Senaru are about 2.5–3 hours' drive from the airport, and most trek operators include transfers.

At 3,726 metres, Rinjani is Indonesia's second-highest volcano and the top of Lombok. Inside its caldera sits Segara Anak, a deep blue crater lake with hot springs. The trek to the rim, the lake and the summit is hard work, and the view from the rim down onto the lake is the reward.

Good to know
- You have to trek with a licensed guide or operator. Porters carry the tents and food.
- The summit trail is steep scree with big drops, and accidents do happen. Go only if you're fit, and turn back if the weather turns.
- It drops close to freezing near the summit. Bring proper warm layers, and carry your rubbish back down.
