redang island

Clear blue water, soft white sand and snorkelling trips in the marine park.

Best time
March to October. Most resorts close for the north-east monsoon, roughly November to February, when the sea is rough. School holidays and long weekends book out early.
How long
3 days, 2 nights
Getting there
Fly to Kuala Terengganu (about an hour from KL) or drive there in about 5 hours. Boats leave from the Merang jetty, about 40 minutes north of town, or from Kuala Terengganu itself, and take about an hour, a bit longer from town. Most resort packages include the transfer.

One of the largest islands off Peninsular Malaysia's east coast, and part of a protected marine park. Most people come on a resort package for the clear water, coral and white sand, especially along Pasir Panjang, the main beach.

Good to know

  • It's a marine park. Don't touch or stand on coral, don't feed the fish, and pack reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Bring enough cash, as facilities on the island are limited.
  • Book early for school holidays, when packages sell out.
