quebec city

Walled streets, steep lanes, river views and French-Canadian comfort food.

Best time
May–October are best for the old town, with summer busiest and autumn colour from late September. Winter is snowy and very cold; the Winter Carnival in late January and February makes it a deliberately wintry trip.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
Fly to Montreal with one stop, usually via Paris, Istanbul or Doha, about 22–26 hours all in, then about 3 hours by train or car. Quebec City is 12 hours behind KL, 13 from November to early March. Malaysians need a Canadian visitor visa, or just an eTA if flying in with a valid US visa or a Canadian visa held in the last 10 years.

Quebec City's old town is the only walled city north of Mexico, on a cliff above the St Lawrence River. Stone houses, steep lanes and the turreted Château Frontenac make it feel like a corner of France.

Good to know

  • Halal is limited in the old town; Sainte-Foy, near Université Laval and the city's main mosque, has more North African and Middle Eastern places.
  • Take the funicular up from the lower town and walk the steps back down.
