- Getting there
- Xiamen Airlines flies direct from KL to Quanzhou Jinjiang a few times a week (about 4.5 hours); the old centre is about 30 minutes away. Or fly to Xiamen (about 4 hours) and take the train or bus, about an hour. Malaysians can visit mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days.

Quanzhou was one of the world's great ports 700 years ago, when Marco Polo knew it as Zaitun, and its old centre is now a UNESCO site. Many Malaysian Chinese families trace their roots here, and Hokkien speakers will feel at home at the snack stalls.

Good to know
- Stay around West Street or Zhongshan Road to walk the old centre; the high-speed station is far out.
- Many local snacks use pork. Lanzhou-style halal noodle shops (look for the qingzhen, 清真, signs) are the easy halal option.
