Puducherry, or Pondy, is a small seaside town in two halves. The old French quarter is quiet, shaded streets of yellow villas and bougainvillea; across the canal, the Tamil town has the markets, the temples and the best breakfasts.

Good to know

  • The town beach is rocky and not for swimming; Paradise Beach, a short boat ride south, is the sandy one.
  • Halal meat is easiest at the Muslim-run biryani shops in the Tamil town; White Town's French-style cafés may use pork and wine.
