prambanan

Towering 9th-century Hindu spires, best paired with a Ramayana ballet.

Best time
May to September is driest, and the open-air Ramayana ballet runs in this season. Late afternoon is cooler and the light on the towers is softer.
How long
Half a day
Getting there
Fly KL to Yogyakarta, about 2.5 hours. Prambanan is about 30–45 minutes' drive east of the city on the road to Solo, and the Jogja–Solo commuter train stops nearby.

A 9th-century Hindu temple compound about 17 km northeast of Yogyakarta, dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Its tall, pointed towers, the main one 47 metres high, make it Indonesia's largest Hindu temple site. The same park also holds Sewu, a large Buddhist temple complex.

Good to know

  • There's little shade in the courtyards. Bring a hat and water.
  • It's still a place of worship. Dress modestly and don't climb on the ruins.
