porto
Tiled churches, steep riverside lanes and bridges over the Douro.
- Best time
- May–October is good for riverside walks, with July–August busiest. November–February is rainy, and the steep cobbles get slippery.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop, usually via Istanbul or Dubai, about 17–19 hours all in. The metro reaches the centre in about 30 minutes. Portugal is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Porto's lanes drop steeply to the Douro, past blue-tiled churches and old shopfronts. Walk across the iron bridge to Gaia for the classic view back at the city.
Makan

Things to do
- RibeiraThe riverfront: tall coloured houses, old wine boats and restaurants facing the water.Map ↗
- Dom Luís I BridgeA two-deck iron bridge; walk the top deck for the best view over the river and the old town.Map ↗
- São Bento stationIts entrance hall is covered in about 20,000 blue-and-white tiles showing scenes from Portuguese history.Map ↗
- Foz do DouroWhere the river meets the Atlantic, with seaside promenades and a lighthouse; the old number 1 tram runs out along the river.Map ↗
Good to know
- The bridge's top deck carries metro trains as well as people, so stick to the footpaths at the sides.
- Halal is thinner than in Lisbon, but a few South Asian and Turkish places in the centre carry halal signs, and grilled fish is easy everywhere.
