Food-cart lunches, bookshops, rose gardens and forest trails close to the city.
- Best time
- July–September are dry and warm, and June is usually pleasant. November–March are grey and wet; late-summer heat or wildfire smoke occasionally gets in the way.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with two stops, usually via Seoul, Taipei or Tokyo and then Seattle or San Francisco, about 21–25 hours all in; Seattle is also about 3.5 hours away by train. The MAX Red Line takes about 40 minutes from the airport to downtown. Portland is 15 hours behind KL, 16 from November to early March. Malaysians need a US B1/B2 visitor visa, usually with an interview at the embassy in KL; ESTA isn't open to Malaysian passports.

Portland does small pleasures well: a huge bookshop, a favourite food cart, a walk under tall firs. The neighbourhoods are the main attraction, with gardens and forest trails inside the city limits.

Good to know
- Travel Portland lists Muslim-owned and halal places, and the bigger food-cart pods often include a halal Middle Eastern or Pakistani cart.
- You won't need a car in the city; MAX trains and the streetcar cover most of it.
