phan rang–thap cham

Cham towers, pottery villages and a dry coast of beaches and vineyards.

Best time
January to August is mostly dry, though May to August is hot. September to December is the wet season, with the heaviest rain in October and November. The strong winter winds from November to March are good for kitesurfing but make the sea choppy.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
AirAsia flies direct from KL to Cam Ranh (Nha Trang) a few days a week, about 2 hours 20 minutes; Phan Rang is about 1–1.5 hours south by road. Or fly to Ho Chi Minh City (about 2 hours) and drive about 5–6 hours. Vietnam is 1 hour behind KL.

The heartland of Vietnam's Cham people, on the driest, windiest stretch of the coast south of Nha Trang. Brick Cham towers, hand-built pottery and vineyards fill the days, with beaches at Ninh Chu and a clifftop coast road north to Vinh Hy.

  2. Bau Truc pottery villageCham women shape pots by hand without a wheel, walking round the clay, as they have for centuries.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Do Po Klong Garai and Bau Truc in the early morning; the sun out here is fierce.
  • Some of the Cham community is Muslim, but halal restaurants are few; seafood and vegetable dishes are the easy fallback.
  • For a beach stay, book at Ninh Chu; the city centre is a few kilometres inland.
