Umbria's capital sits on a hilltop, with a lively student crowd and a medieval centre of steep lanes and sudden views. Below the main street, escalators carry you through a medieval quarter buried under a papal fortress.

Good to know
- The Minimetrò from the railway station to Pincetto saves the long climb into the old town.
- Halal meat is hard to find in the old town; torta al testo with greens and truffle pasta are easy meat-free meals.
