Island-hopping archipelago with basalt cliffs, the Twin Hearts fish weir and fireworks.

Best time
April to September is the season, with calmer seas and the fireworks festival over the harbour. From October to March strong north-east winds make boat trips rough, and many outer-island services stop.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly from KL to Taipei (about 5 hours), then a domestic flight to Magong (about 50 minutes). There are also flights from Kaohsiung and Taichung, and ferries from Kaohsiung and Chiayi.

An archipelago of about 90 islands in the Taiwan Strait, between Taiwan and mainland China, with Magong as the main town. People come for beaches, basalt columns, old stone fish traps, island-hopping by boat and the fireworks festival.

Good to know

  • Rent a scooter or car to get around. Buses are limited, and you'll need an international driving permit that covers the vehicle.
  • The sun is fierce and there's little shade. Bring a hat and sunscreen.
  • Boats to the outer islands depend on the weather, so keep your plans flexible.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
